SAMPLE DIALOGUE
WILT I told you so, confound it! HENRIETTE The police were very kind. They took us home in their squad car as soon as they found out we were at the University. One of them even asked if he might call on me - WILT Call on you? Impertinent young puppy! HENRIETTE He was very considerate -walked me up to our door. It quite a splendid adventure really. WILT How do you think your "splendid adventure" makes us looks? I can see the headlines -- "English graduate student nabbed in police raid!" HENRIETTE Oh, that's all right. I said I was studying French. They seemed to understand. WILT French? HENRIETTE Well, I am. I'm reading Sardou - you know, the playwright -- WILT . I know. He writes asinine stuff. HENRIETTE Well, it may not be very intellectual, sir, that's quite true. But he was popular. I'm interested in popular theater. [Eagerly, enthusiastically] Did you know there was a whole popular theater by the Swedes here in Chicago- WILT Of course I do. HENRIETTE Well, (Defiantly) I'm going to study ... WILT Study what you d.... confoundedly well like. Just study. HENRIETTE Do you think I don't? Have you looked at my academic record, WILT Oh, your grades are all right, but ... HENRIETTE What? WILT You waste time. Dance halls, baseball games .... HENRIETTE Yes. The Sox. WILT Eh? HENRIETTE The White Sox. WILT What? HENRIETTE (Raising her voice) That's the name of a team. WILT No need to shout. I'm not deaf. Frivolous, Frivolous! HENRIETTE If you're finished, Mr. Wilt -- WILT No, damn it, I'm not finished. Do something useful with all that spare time you seem to have. Go to the theater! HENRIETTE Are you telling me how to behave? WILT With me. HENRIETTE Because I won't - what? WILT Come to the theater with me. Well -- there. What do you say? HENRIETTE Oh! WILT Oh, what? HENRIETTE Oh -- yes -- ! |
"WHEN LILACS BLOOM AGAIN IN THE DOORYARD"
Synopsis "When Lilacs Bloom in the Dooryard," originally titled, "Henriette, the Queen," is a short, but incredibly tuneful, musical written in honor and memory of Henriette C. K. Naeseth, a beloved teacher and Chair of the English Department at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois by two of her former students, Dr. Ann Boaden and Joan Beaumont. The musical traces Henriette's life, from her childhood in Deborah, Iowa to her eventual employment by Dr. Andreen at Augustana College. Along the way, we revisit her student days at the University of Chicago, her relationship with Napier Wilt - the sometime Chair of the English Department there, and her arrest in a Chicago speakeasy. We also become acquainted with her love of theater and the Chicago White Sox. This is an ideal vehicle for two actor/soloist and a small chorus, with the chorus members doubling as the lesser principals. CAST LIST NARRATOR HENRIETTE C. K (KOREN) NAESETH A child, a student, a professor of English, and the central character. MRS. OLSEN A well-meaning neighbor in Decorah, Iowa. MRS. NAESETH Henriette's mother. A "progressive" thinker. NAPIER WILT Professor of English, and sometime chair of the English Department, University of Chicago. Henriette's significant other DR. GUSTAV ANDREEN President, Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois SMALL CHORUS Chorus members "double" as lesser principals. |
