"THE LITTLE HERALD ANGEL"
Synopsis It is Christmas Eve, a couple hours after dark on a city street. When officer O’Connor sees a small child alone on the street, he investigates, and the child tells him that he/she is an angel. Officer O’Connor and the others who come along put the child to the test to determine whether she is in fact an angel. Cast of Characters (Cast of 5. Sister is female. The other characters can be male or female) Child A small young girl, about 10 years of age Dog A big friendly furry dog Officer Patrick O’Connor A police officer walking his beat Sister Sheila A nun Dr. Stengel A psychologist The Setting A city street, just after dark, one Christmas eve. | ||

"The Little Herald Angel." Officer O'Connor. Now what's a wee lass like you, doing out at this time of night? Child. I'm Christmas caroling. O'Connor. (One step to her) Yes, I can see that. What I meant, is why are you out alone so late at night? Child. Because it's Christmas eve. O'Connor. Do your parents know your out at this time of night? Child. My Father does. He sends me out every Christmas eve. O'Connor. Where does your father live? Child. (Indicating) Up there. O'Connor. (Puzzled, he moves to child, and looks up where she is indicating) Up where? Child. (Pointing) Up there. O'Connor. (Looks at child quizzically) What's he doing up there? Child. That's where he lives. O'Connor. (Hands on hips) And where do you live? Child. Up there... except when I'm down here. O'Connor. Now I suppose you're going to tell me that you're an angel? Child. Actually, I'm a herald angel. I used to be angel. I got promoted? O'Connor. Oh, is that so. When was that? Child. The night Jesus was born. That's when they found out I could sing. O'Connor. (Looking at the dog, he crosses L past child to about 4 feet from dog. Child counters)) Now, I suppose you’re gonna tell me that that’s an angel, too! Child. No, that’s a dog. I’m surprised that you didn’t know that. O'Connor. Of course, I knew it was a dog. I just thought .... Child. Oh, now I get it. You thought he might be a herald angel dog... O'Connor. Ah, yes. Or something like that. Child. No, he can’t sing. Well, he likes to try, but he’s really not very good. O'Connor. Let’s hear him try! Child. (She crosses to dog; Officer counters) Okay. Sing Boy! Dog: A-roooough-ooo-ooo! Child. I told you he wasn’t very good. O'Connor. And why does an angel have a dog? ******************************************************************** |
