"The Diabolical Deed at the Starlight Theatre"
An old-fashioned Melodrama by Cheri L. Maxson Synopsis The box office money has been stolen and Crystal Chanda Lear has been kidnapped! Three rival gangs do their best to run off with the charity funds raised by the Starlight Theatre to be given to the orphanage. A posse is formed and Sheriff Dusty Rhodes always gets his man…or woman! This rollicking melodrama features a primarily female cast (with many roles easily gender adaptable) and is fast-paced and full of gags, puns, chases and silliness that will appeal to all ages. It’s also a great one act show to get young actor’s feet wet on the melodrama stage. Simple sets, props and costumes bring to life the wild old west days and the fun of classic melodrama. “The Diabolical Deed at the Starlight Theatre” or “How Many Villains Does It Take to Steal the Loot?” will make audiences laugh out loud. Cast of Characters Cast Requirements: 25 Roles (3 males 22 Females, but 8 can be either with small name changes as indicated to change gender – see below). Shirley and Gladys are non-speaking roles intentionally – these are for students who want to be on stage, but who not ready for speaking roles. (We cast campers from grades 5-8 in this melodrama). Heroes: The Turner Triplets - Actors Paige Turner Patty Turner Penny Turner Heroes: The DeLite Twins – who Aunt Glo adopted – the girls are actors Carrie DeLite Bea DeLite Sheriff Dusty Rhodes Hero: Orphanage Director - Auntie Glo DeLite Hero: Theatre Owner – Allota Fun Heroes: Allota’s daughters – Theatre Stage Crew Gladys Fun Shirley Fun Hero: Leading Lady – Crystal Chanda Lear Hero: Leading Man – Ed Overeels Villains: The Surly Sidekick Gang Leader/Villain – Willie Becaught (or Wilhemina “Willie” Becaught – dresses like classic villain in black cape and top hat and swirling mustache) Sidekick – Anita Bathe (outlaw- she’s a little dirty and smelly) Sidekick – Andy (or Andi) Tover (outlaw) Sidekick – Des (or Dez) Burratto (outlaw) Villains: The Cactus Gulch Gang – Leader: Marsha Mello (her weapon of choice is – you guessed it – marshmallows- dresses in white hat, white bandana) Ali Bye (or Al Ibye) – (outlaw) Di O’Bolick (outlaw) Freda Dee Dark (or Fred A. DeDark) – (outlaw) Villains: The Muddy River Gang – Leader: Faye Tality (the fastest “gum” bubble blower in the West – dresses in pink hat and pink bandana) Fran Tick (male) – (outlaw) Heidi Valuables (outlaw) Ivana Veekoff (or Ivan A. Veekoff) – (outlaw) Narrator (s)- you can always divide the lines up and add more if you like!) RUNNING TIME AND SETTING Run Time: Approximately 45 minutes Setting: Sometime in the “Old Wild West in a small western town.” Bare stage primarily, but props and small set pieces can be brought on to indicate change of setting in each scene (i.e. tumble weeds, small broken down pieces of furniture, painted “rocks,” flats or moving walls painted to look like cacti, a cave or mine, etc. Be creative!) SCENES Scene 1 – The Starlight Theatre Scene 2 – The Surly Sidekick Gang’s Hideout (old dilapidated cabin) Scene 3 – The Cactus Gulch Gang’s Hideout (a mine) Scene 4 – The Muddy River Gang’s Hideout (a cave) Scene 5 – The Starlight Theatre |
