EXCERPT FROM LIBRETTO
SONG NO. 9. "Meeting Song"
(Women's Chorus and Men's Chorus) Women's chorus. Let's carry Christ to the mis- sion field! Men's chorus. With care we've built our stalwart church. Women's chorus. What are we waiting for? Let's go! Men's chorus. We wait upon its glory! Emmy. Members of the General Council of the Augustana Church Synod: As you know, the Woman’s Missionary Society by its own untiring efforts, has become an incorporated organization. We have paid the salaries of women missionary doctors, we have sent women to medical school, we publish our own magazine-- [May Mellander hands her a paper.} Emmy. –and we have made up a deficit in the men’s mission society. [Glances and cleared throats from the Mighty Ministers] Emmy. Most recently, in the current year of 1907, we have raised all the money for a new hospital in Rajahmundry, India. The figures please, Miss Mellander. [May Mellander hands her a paper. She adjusts her glasses and reads.] The sum was $12,000. And we have purchased a building site there. But the work has been slowed by the constant need for application to and authorization by the Synod’s Foreign Mission Board. We therefore petition the Synod to allow the Woman’s Missionary Society full control of our own finances! [Gasp from the Synod Boys. Carl Peterson, in the front row, is especially shocked.] One minister. Do you mean-- Another minister. Without first applying to the Church-- Carl Peterson. But that’s impossible! Minister. It’s never been done! Emmy. But gentlemen—don’t you trust us? Don’t you understand our fervent commitment to mission? Don’t you remember the long nights and days your wives and daughters have spent filling and sending out dime books, dimes gathered from their own meager resources? Packing Boxes of Blessing and Christmas cheer to ship to our missionaries? And what about all the bake sales and church suppers to raise money? Gentlemen, we have demonstrated how fully and firmly we are devoted to undergirding the Mission effort-- [At this point her bloomers slip down. Gasps from the WMS. Emmy calmly steps out and kicks aside the offending article.] Emmy [getting tougher]. And furthermore, gentlemen, before the women expend their money, they desire that the future management of this hospital and other projects be wholly under the control of the Woman’s Missionary Society. [Men confer.] One minister. Can’t do this. Minister #2. Dangerous precedent. Minister. Hear she’s very thick with this Susan B. Anthony who’s agitating for the women to get the vote! Minister. Done an excellent job, though—and we do need this hospital desperately. Minister [to Emmy]. Can we assume that your policies will be consistent with ours? Emmy. Of course! Minister. Are we ready to vote then, gentlemen? [Murmurs of assent.] All in favor? [“Ayes.” All but one.] Minister. Opposed? Carl Peterson [loudly]. Nay! Minister. The ayes have it. We place great trust in you, ladies. We hope and believe that it will not be abused. SONG No. 10. “Emmy Will Come out on Top” [reprise] [Women’s chorus] Women's chorus. When disappointments cloud us, When oppositions crowd us, When all are warmest hopes are growing cold. That's when she takes the rostrum, And knocks them clear to Boston, And all the future turns to gold! And all the future turns to gold! When all our progress seems to stop, And every scheme inclines to flop-- And even when her bloomers drop Our Emmy, our Emmy, Emmy will come out on top! Oh yes! Emmy will come out on top! Emmy will come out on top! |
EMMY!
SYNOPSIS Emmy Carlson Evald was born in September 1857 in Geneva, Illinois, and died in Chicago, Illinois, in December 1946.* Emmy was a Christian woman of action. Between 1892 and 1935 she was the leader and president of the (Lutheran) Women's Missionary Society (WMS) . At its height, the WMS boasted 61,052 members. In 1906 she helped to start the newspaper "Missions-Tidning." The newspaper was first published in Swedish; later, in English, as"Mission Tidings." The paper had a global impact. Emmy contributed to the paper on a regular basis until 1935. It was to become an important instrument for the Women's Missionary Society in reaching out and informing readers about its activities. Emmy, however, was a woman of fatih not content with prayer; she believed her faith had to be supplemented with good works. She and the WMS best realized her call by constructing many buildings - including schools and hospitals - to benefit "God's other children," as she called them, in Africa, China, India, the Holy Land and the United States. Her life was patterned upon Christ's Easter command to Mary Magdalene, to "Go tell ...." "I know what you women saying. You are saying, "but I have my own home duties, to husband and children, to my own church." That’s why we need to join together! From our home churches we can fuel our beacons of light to the world. We women are a power—never forget that. We may not be allowed ordination—but we are consecrated ministers of the Gospel just as surely as the men. We can support our missionaries not only with prayer but also with good practical commonsense assistance. We can be partners in Christ’s Great Commission: “Go ye, and teach all nations!” Ladies! Will you join me? This is the story of a Christian feminist, set to music.
